It’s election time again

Filed under: General — Shamgar @ 6:22 pm

Well, for weeks I’ve been wanting to write on a slew of topics. I still expect to get to many of them. There’s been a literal cascade of disasters around the US which deserve commentary and further make points I’ve tried to make for years. My latest Sunday School class is over and I’m looking to take care of some things which have lain fallow for some time before I get to them. It’s worth waiting to make sure we cover it properly.

However, I would be remiss if I didn’t comment at least briefly on the upcoming election. Frankly, this is the worst election year yet for me. I completely forgot about the hoops I had to jump through when I moved in order to ensure I could vote until late last month. I’m beginning to suspect my updated information was not received in time, and thus I will be excluded. This is truly unfortunate. I don’t get nearly enough opportunities to vote against Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. Most of the time the Democrats don’t even bother to field a candidate. It’s disgusting.

In addition, I’m not going to get to express my utter frustration, anger, and disappointment with the Republican party. It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever planned on voting for a Democrat. I’ve long believed that absent the dominance of true classical liberalism the best possible result of an election is absolute deadlock. Anything that can at least slow, if not prevent, more damage, more hemorrhaging of liberty and freedom, is a good thing. So I would love to see that come about here.

Bush is just plain out of control. Perhaps … perhaps … he won’t carry about abuses to their furtherest extent. But the groundwork he has laid spells potential disaster from a future president. He and his administration have shown a complete lack of foresight. The party has for the most part fallen in lockstep with him. That’s frightening. It seems like there is nothing they won’t approve. The democrats, for their part, have likewise done absolutely nothing. They’re completely disorganized and spineless.

I would LOVE to see every single incumbent politician, almost without exception, get thrown out on their rear and replaced with someone new. And then again in 2008, and again in 2010. However, I know that’s not going to happen. I do believe we’ll see the GOP lose the house. The democrats might have the senate when the dust settles, but it’s going to be close.

Whatever it is, I’m so glad that I can trust God for the outcome. Good or Bad in my perception, he means it for his glory, and in the end that’s all that matters. It may very well be that this is God’s judgment on America. And no I don’t mean in the sense of “all those sinners”. I mean that it very well may be his judgment not just for the rampant sexual immorality, and for abortion, but for our godless educational institutions. Including our seminaries. More than that, for our godless churches. We have been blessed inordinately. We never deserve the blessings and mercies of God ever. But when we receive them anyway, we ought not to squander them, and we have.

We as a people have become lax not just in terms of our government but in our churches, and nobody cares. We certainly can’t say we don’t deserve judgment, but I sure do pray for mercy…mercy, and a wake up call to the church, and a wake up call to the people, and a wake up call to our government.

If/When you go to the polls this week, I pray that you will carefully consider your choices. Carefully consider the risks of continuing to allow this party that calls itself the GOP, but bears no resemblance to the party as we would remember its history, run rampant and unchecked. This government, and particularly its police power, has grown more under this administration than it ever did under Clinton. And I’m not talking about military spending. They have promised the RR whatever it takes. They have repeatedly warned us that they are our only hope of overturning Roe v Wade. They’ve told us they can fix the issues in public schools. Well when? How long should we wait? How long should we be duped before we wake up and send them a message that tells them we won’t be placated with their platitudes and empty promises? If you want change, then scare them!

I know it’s unpopular to even think about voting for someone who wouldn’t oppose roe-v-wade. But I ask you, how many of the men you’re voting for have done anything about it? What is the likelihood that they will in the next 4 years? It’s not like we’re running the risk of legalizing it. It already IS legal, and it’s going to stay that way as long as we allow the republicans to promise us the moon and then turn their back and mock us once they have what they want.

If your conscience allows it, vote democrat. Or if its easier, libertarian. Quite the opposite from my normal encouragement, I know, but I don’t want to just steal votes, I want to see a positive change in office.
