Going round on torture

Filed under: Theology, Politics, General — Shamgar @ 6:17 pm

Mr Pike has shared some thoughts on my reply. I can’t help but admit that I’m somewhat disappointed in the response. Peter, you claim that I have interpreted your words in the most negative light possible. I reread my post, and I must admit I don’t see it. If it is the case, I apologize, and will seek to correct it. However, I must note the conspicuous absence of a single example to support your accusation.

Regarding the Memorandum on Torture

Filed under: General — Shamgar @ 5:21 am

Given that this whole issue of torture that I’m thinking about has its roots in the issues surrounding 9/11 and the memo (pdf) on torture from the office of the general counsel in particular, I tought I’d do some research.

Reading this is frightening. I used to think that ambulance chasers gave lawyers a bad name. After reading this, I think they are something to aspire to compared to the people who drafted this piece of trash.

Let me summarize for you. The president has the full discretion to disregard any law he wishes, if he believes that it conflicts with his perceived duties as commander in chief. No Court Review, no Congressional oversight. This would include, in particular, the torture statute portion of Title 18, international law, and the UCMJ.

sniff sniff

Smells like fascism in here.

FDA

Filed under: General — Shamgar @ 2:41 pm

This vioxx controversy cracks me up. All of a sudden now we realize that maybe the FDA isn’t being as rigourous as they should be? I’m truly shocked. What really gets me are some of the comments I’ve heard made by the FDA. I was watching the news last night (I wanted quotes, but didn’t write them down at the time and can’t find them now), and I heard an FDA spokesperson say:

“The Drugs approved by the FDA are the safest in the world. There is no danger.”

Which, in my mind, sounds roughly like:

“These are not the droids you’re looking for.”

Someone should tell them that jedi mind tricks, even in the movies, only worked on the weak minded.

Torture justifiable?

Filed under: Theology, Politics, General — Shamgar @ 4:01 am

Mr. Pike has written a blog entry on the issue of torture. Specifically, he has attempted to justify this morally, and practically. More than that, he (I would hope) believes his position is in accordance with scripture, and is practical and workable. I strongly disagree with this. In this post, I aim to explain why I disagree, and give the necessary support for it. CalvinDude (Mr Pike) and I have had several “discussions” in the past on various political issues. It is my hope that we can continue to maintain a civil discourse. This time, at least, we won’t have to abuse the captive audience of the channel with our discussion.

Right off I want to say that I understand that while his arguments are poorly supoprted that doesn’t mean that they have no support. While I think he should have anticipated a challenge on this, and supported his arguments accordingly, this is a blog we’re talking about. I myself quite often write my blog to myself, and to people who think like me. I don’t always provide all the supporting evidence for every statement people might take issue with. It would not be fair to presume that CD’s blog post represents the entirety of his thoughts on this.

So, I look forward to any clarification and further support Mr Pike might be able to provide for his thoughts on this issue.

John Kerry Supporters Mentally Unstable?

Filed under: General — Shamgar @ 6:33 pm

Yes, many of us have been saying it for a long time, but apparently it’s news to Boca Raton.

Yes, John Kerry supporters are depressed over the election. At least one suicide, expressions of wanting to leave the country, and some who are just plain depressed and feeling a lack of desire to vote.

Well to that I say, don’t let the screen door hit you in the rear on the way out.

I love this line: “We’re referring people with election-related stress to the Democratic National Committee,” said Karen Jacobs of the Center for Group Counseling.

What? The DNC is now a trained counseling center? They can’t field a decent candidate, but they can make you feel better about it afterward?

What a bunch of sniveling whiners. Did you see anyone comitting suicde over clinton getting elected? Threatening to leave the country—as if that was somehow going to change everything, cause heaven knows X is SOOO important to us—or getting counseling over the loss?

Good grief. And these
people
wonder why the rest of the country doesn’t sync up with their sniveling approach to the world.

The morning after

Filed under: General — Shamgar @ 4:41 pm

Obviously, we have yet to receive an official word, but the results seem fairly clear. Bush has emerged the clear winner in this election, in spite of Kerry still not managing to scrape together enough integrity to go out and admit it. Perhaps, though I will likely be castigated for it, too clear. Kerry was a horrible candidate. A lot of people voted against him. Yet I fear that will not be taken into account and Bush will take that as an endorsement, a mandate even, to continue his big government practices. To continue expanding the police powers of the state, to continue to increase discretionary non-military spending. To generally be a thorn in the side of true conservatives and classical liberals everywhere.

IMUS says Swift Vets should be executed!

Filed under: Politics — Shamgar @ 3:31 pm

Unconscionable!
Don Imus:

Those fat old drunks from those Swift Vet ads. All of them should be executed…fat old drunks from those Swift Vet ads, disgraceful human beings, war criminals.”

Yeah, but FNC is the channel with Bias. MSNBC is fair and balanced. snort Executed eh? Ok, how about we start with those guilty of treason. And where in the world does someone with Imus’ background get off calling anyone a drunk!? “Hello Pot? This is kettle calling. Um…you’re black.”

Next in the news, Michael Moore announces Overweight folks with big mouths should be ignored!

Headline: John Kerry says: Wafflers should be shot!

Election day

Filed under: Politics — Shamgar @ 4:46 pm

Depressing. I looked at the overall ballot this morning to make sure I knew everyone who was running and confirm my votes before going to the poll. Of course, a couple democrats in our district were running completely unopposed. What is that? Reps/libs can’t come up with ANY candidates to go up against them?

Worst of all was Zaffarini, who once again is running unopposed. If she were in my county, I would find a way to run, just to try and oust her. She’s a pox on the texas legislature.

Then there’s the wonderful news of people opening polling status all over and finding hundreds or even thousands of votes already in place before the polls even opened. Not to mention places like WI where evidence was presented to show over 2000 registered voters to have registered with nonexistant addresses, with photographic evidence, only to be disregarded.
